Arizona Pool Safety Regulations
In Arizona, it's crucial to follow pool safety regulations, especially if there are children under six years old living at a residence with a swimming pool. A.R.S. § 36-1681 outlines the requirements for pool enclosures, including:
- Complete enclosure of the pool area with a wall, fence, or barrier at least 5 feet high.
- No openings, handholds, or footholds on the exterior side that could be used to climb the barrier.
- Additional measures if the residence is part of the enclosure, such as a 4-foot-tall barrier between the pool and living area, a motorized safety pool cover meeting ASTM standards, and specific safety features for doors and windows.
Gate Requirements:
- Open outward from the pool.
- Be self-closing and self-latching with latch mechanisms meeting specific height and release criteria.
Pool Safety Recommendations by Arizona Department of Health Services:
To ensure pool safety, follow these recommendations:
- Never leave children unattended in the pool area.
- Always supervise children in or around the pool, even with flotation devices or swimming lessons.
- Display CPR/CCR instructions and emergency contact information in the pool area.
- Keep a phone easily accessible in case of emergencies.
- Attend water rescue and CPR/CCR classes and keep lifesaving equipment accessible.
- Regularly inspect gate locks and latches for proper functioning.
- Ensure gates are never left propped open and remove items that could be used to climb the pool barrier.
- In an emergency, shout for help, remove the child from the water, call 911, and administer CPR/CCR if necessary.
